FEEDING OF INDIGENOUS GALACTOPOIETIC FEED SUPPLEMENTS TO DAIRY ANIMALS.

Dr. R.P.S. Baghel,  Dr. R.K. Tiwari and Dr. S. Nayak J.N.Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Jabalpur.

India boasts of being one of oldest civilizations of the world and here animal husbandry is practiced since time immemorial. The man-land-cattle ecosystem in the country is based on natural symbiotic relationship where cattle and buffaloes have complimentary, supplementary and sustainable relationship with crops. India has a large number of cattle and buffalo population consisting of 16% of the world’s cattle and 55% of world’s buffalo population. Although, Indian dairying has made a rapid stride but chronic shortage of feed and fodder with poor nutritive value lowered the productive capacity of Indian dairy animals. Both qualitatively and quantitatively there exists a large gap in demand and supply of feed and fodder (Pandey, 1995). This deficit is to the tune of 46% DCP and 44% TDN.

It is, therefore, essential to examine her scientifically as a complex and elegant machine for production of milk, the nearest thing in nature to be a complete food. Efforts are being made for several years to search new resources of animal feed to meet out this shortage. Various indigenous products have been in use by the farmers, which are mostly galactopoietic in nature. Higher milk yield and regular breeding of the cows are two important traits, which cause much concern to the farmers because high producing animals face reproductive problems, which the farmers try to achieve by economic feeding. For this many products have been tried, which have mostly replaced the high cost concentrates.

Recent investigations have shown that some of the plants also posses  galactopoietic activity. These, on addition in the feeds of animals, have shown to improve the productivity of dairy animals. Besides being cheaper and easily available, these are comparatively non-toxic and have no side effect.

The plants or its parts reported to possess galactopoietic effects are mentioned as below:
