A study was conducted on the performance of Vanaraja birds in the hilly tribal area of Vizianagaram district. Day old chicks were obtained from the Project Directorate on Poultry (PDP), Hyderabad and transported to Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Rastakuntubai, Vizianagaram district, Andhra Pradesh. They were reared under intensive system with brooding up to 4-6 weeks of age and are vaccinated against Ranikhet and Marek’s diseases. An on-farm testing of the performance of Vanaraja birds in comparison to their progeny and desi birds was done. Data on the body weights of the three groups of birds at 1 day 4, 6, 26, 32, 40 and 48 weeks of age; Egg weight at 32 and 48 weeks of age, age at first egg, egg production up to 9 and 18 months of age, hatchability and survivability are presented. The performance of Vanaraja birds was found to be higher on all counts followed by the Progeny of Vanaraja birds procured from PDP and desi birds performed at the lowest levels among the three groups studied.

Day old chicks, 4 week, 6 week and 26 week old birds of Vanaraja, Vanaraja Progeny and desi birds weighed 36, 32.3 and 26.5 g, 425, 325 and 162.5 g, 775, 550 and 275 g and 2250, 1875 and 1150 g, respectively. Vanaraja birds started laying eggs at an early age and the eggs were heavier when compared to the other groups studied. Vanaraja, Vanaraja progeny and desi birds produced between 45-50, 30-45 and 12-20 eggs by nine months of age and between 140-150, 100-115 and 45-60 eggs by 18 months of age, respectively and the colour of the eggs was brown in all the three groups. The hatchability and survivability was also higher in Vanaraja birds than their progeny obtained on the farm and the desi birds.
