The present study was conducted to assess the differences in growth and egg production performance of Vanaraja bird maintained on two different rations in semi-intensive housing system in NRC Mithun and free-range systems of backyard poultry keeping in four villages. The data of growth and egg production performance of Vanaraja birds were collected once in a two weeks interval up to 40 weeks in both the groups. The body weight and egg production performance of Vanaraja birds at village backyard condition by feeding on complete maize based diet, maintained semi intensively at different villages (T1, T2 and T3) at 6 to 8 weeks of age differs significantly, but there was no significant difference found in body weight of the birds in later part of the experimental period. The egg production performance (26 to 28 weeks) differs significantly, but no significant difference was found in remaining part of experimental period. It can be concluded from the present study that although there is extreme climatic condition prevails in this hilly state of Nagaland, the Vanaraja bird is a promising variety for rearing in backyard condition semi-intensively at village level of this region.
