Study on genetic aspects on feed efficiency traits in two strains of White Leghorn reared under different feeding regimen

  The data on 1058 and 547 pullets of IWN and IWP strain from 60 and 50 sire families of fourth generation were utilized for present study. IWN strain birds were maintained under individual feeding regimen while IWP strain birds were fed in groups. The least squares means for daily feed consumption up to 40 (FCD 40), 56 (FCD 56) and 64 (FCD 64) weeks of age were ranged between 106.82 ± 0.28 to 109.05 ± 0.23 gm in IWN strain while 105.03 ± 0.31 to 109.24 ± 0.31 gm in IWP strain. Feed consumed to produce dozen of eggs up to 40 (FCDE 40), 56 (FCDE 56) and at 64 (FCDE 64) weeks of age were 1.539 ± 0.007, 1.510 ± 0.006, and 1.533 ± 0.006 kg for IWN strain while 1.668 ± 0.032, 1.673 ± 0.026, and 1.761 ± 0.030 kg for IWP strain respectively. Whereas, Feed consumed to produce kilo of eggs up to 40 (FCKE 40), 56 (FCKE 56) and at 64 (FCKE 64) weeks of age were 2.609 ± 0.010, 2.501 ± 0.009, and 2.513 ± 0.010 kg for IWN strain while 2.656 ± 0.031, 2.691 ± 0.037 and 2.842 ± 0.040 kg for IWP strain respectively. The heritability estimates from sire component of variance were 0.477 ± 0.113, 0.452 ± 0.114 and 0.366 ± 0.101 for feed consumption up to 40, 56 and 64 weeks of age for IWN strain while the same for IWP strain were 0.047 ± 0.078, 0.005 ± 0.070 and 0.018 ± 0.072 respectively. The h 2 for feed efficiency traits either in term of dozen eggs or kilo of eggs were ranged between 0.273 ± 0.087 to 0.410 ± 0.108 for IWN strain while it ranged from 0.032 ± 0.075 to 0.078 ± 0.084 for IWP strain. The genetic correlations of daily feed consumption with efficiency traits were high and positive in IWN strain.
