Genetic study of income minus feed cost (IMFC) in a White Leghorn strain

An experiment was conducted to study the genetic aspects of Income Minus Feed Cost (IMFC) in 1217 pedigreed pullets from 50 sires & 250 dams of IWN strain maintained under A.I.C.R.P. on Poultry, Veterinary College , Anand. IMFC of individual birds was calculated by subtracting feed cost from relative egg price based on average egg weight of the pullet. The average IMFC value from 21-40 & 21-56 weeks of age was Rs.7.63 and Rs.27.15 respectively. The least square means for egg number produced up to 40 (EN 40) and 56 (EN 56) weeks of age were 118.40 ± 0.29 and 211.92 ± 0.49 whereas, for egg weight at 40 (EW 40) and 56 (EW 56) week of age was 51.60 ± 0.06 and 52.45 ± 0.08 g respectively. The Heritability estimated from sire component of variance for IMFC 21-40 (0.41 ± 0.10) and IMFC 21-56 (0.42 ± 0.10) was high & significant (P<0.01). The genetic correlation of IMFC 21-40 with EN 40, EN 56, EW 40 & EW 56 were 0.05 ± 0.22, 0.25 ± 0.23, 0.86 ± 0.07 & 0.68 ± 0.11 whereas, corresponding value of IMFC21-56 were –0.21 ± 0.21, 0.38 ± 0.22, 0.89 ± 0.06 & 0.72 ± 0.10, respectively
