Genetic aspects of egg production traits in a synthetic line of White Leghorn

A synthetic line of White Leghorn developed at Poultry Complex, Veterinary College, Anand is under selection for egg number as well as egg weight. The data on 426 pullets from 40 sire families of tenth generation were utilized. The least squares means for egg number produced up to 40 (EN 40), 56 (EN 56) and 72 (EN 72) weeks of age were 115.16 ± 0.62, 206.16 ± 0.97 and 283.64 ± 1.56 whereas, egg weight at 32 (EW 32), 40 (EW 40), 56 (EW 56) and at 72 (EW 72) weeks of age were 54.07 ± 0.17, 55.80 ± 0.17, 61.59 ± 0.21 & 58.29 ± 0.16g respectively The heritability estimated from sire component of variance for EW 32, EW 40, EW 56 and EW 72 was 0.096 ± 0.107, 0.259 ± 0.136, 0.157 ± 0.121 and 0.056 ± 0.110 whereas, for EN 40, EN 56 & EN 72 was 0.444 ± 0.164, 0.291 ± 0.143 & 0.208 ± 0.134 respectively. The genetic correlations between egg number and egg weights at different ages were in general negative and moderate to high in magnitude except between EW 32 x EN 56 & EW 32 x EN 72 were positive& low in magnitude.
