Poultry status of Thalaivasal area of Salem district in Tamil Nadu

Thalaivasal area of Attur Taluk, Salem District of Tamil Nadu is one among the major egg production centers of Tamil Nadu. In early 90’s along with agricultural activity, few farmers started commercial layer farm with a capacity of 500 to 1000 layers. In this area, during the last 5 years period, the commercial hybrid layer population increased from 1,00,000 to 10,00,000 layers. Totally 34 commercial layers farms existed within 10 km radius in this area with a daily egg production of more than 7,00,000 eggs. All the layers are reared either in cage house or elevated cage house. The daily feed requirement in this area is about 90 tones with a daily turn over of Rs. 18,00,000/-. More than 100 families are benefited through the poultry industry in this area; out of which 70 per cent are rural women folk. More than 50 percent of the farms with own feed mill and direct egg marketing system. The remaining farms are under integrated marketing system. No major disease problems encountered during the last 3 years period. The dead bird disposal is through carcass pit in more than 50 per cent of farms and the remaining through burial method.
